What this does not include
- Works out the tax on assessment for a full income year at a steady salary. Your employer withholds tax each payday with the PAYG withholding scales, which are not used here, so a payslip can differ a little.
- Covers an Australian resident for the whole year with salary from one job. Non-residents, working holiday makers, part year residents, other income and capital gains are not included.
- The tax free threshold is part of the rates, so annual tax is the same whether or not you claim it with your employer; not claiming it only means more is withheld during the year.
- Super guarantee is worked out on salary before any salary sacrifice. From 1 July 2026 it is paid on qualifying earnings under Payday Super, and whether sacrificed salary counts there was not confirmed on an official page.
- Contributions over the concessional cap are flagged but not taxed here: the excess is added to taxable income on assessment. Unused cap carried forward from earlier years is not included.
- Division 293 tax is shown in the super figures and not taken from take home pay, because it is assessed separately after the year ends.
- Income for the surcharge and study loan repayment income here are taxable income plus salary sacrificed. Reportable fringe benefits, net investment losses and other add backs are not included.
- The senior and pensioner tax offset (SAPTO), its Medicare thresholds and other tax offsets are not included.
- For a couple, the Medicare levy family reduction is shared by taxable income, and any part one partner cannot use reduces the other partner's levy. A sole parent needs family tax benefit for children to raise the family threshold.
- One spouse income figure is used both for the family reduction and for the family surcharge tier. The law measures the reduction on the spouse's taxable income alone, so when a spouse who salary sacrifices enters that amount too, the reduction here comes out slightly low.

This calculator works out the pay an Australian resident keeps from a salary in the 2026-27 income year, which runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. It takes off the A$ 1,000 standard deduction for work expenses, applies the resident tax rates with the first rate now 15%, the low income tax offset and the 2% Medicare levy, then any HELP repayment and the Medicare levy surcharge when they apply. On a salary of A$ 90,000 the take home pay is A$ 71,000 a year, or A$ 2,730.77 a fortnight, and the employer pays A$ 10,800 of super on top. The result can be shown for a week, a fortnight, a month or a year, and the salary you type stays in this browser tab.
How to use the Australia Pay Calculator
- Type your salary before tax and choose whether it is the pay for a year, a month, a fortnight or a week.
- Say whether that figure is a salary with super paid on top or a package that already includes super. Tip: Job ads that quote a package include the super guarantee, so the salary inside it is smaller.
- Switch on the HELP option if you have a study loan, and switch off private hospital cover if you do not hold it. Tip: Without cover, the Medicare levy surcharge starts once a single person's income for surcharge purposes passes A$ 105,000.
- Open More options for salary sacrifice, work expenses above the standard deduction, or a spouse and children. Tip: Set Family to spouse or dependent children first; with Single the children and spouse income boxes are ignored.
- Read the take home pay a fortnight at the top, or pick Week, Month or Year above it to see the same pay for another period, then open How we calculate for the tax by bracket.
Worked example
An Australian resident is paid a salary of A$ 90,000 for the 2026-27 income year, with super paid on top, no study loan, private hospital cover and no work expenses above the standard deduction. Amounts are in Australian dollars (AUD).
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Salary before tax | A$ 90,000 a year |
| The pay entered is | Salary, super paid on top |
| HELP or other study loan | No |
| Private hospital cover | Yes |
Taxable income = 90,000 - 1,000 standard deduction = 89,000 Income tax = 4,020 + 30% x (89,000 - 45,000) = 17,220, with no low income tax offset above 66,667 Medicare levy = 2% x 89,000 = 1,780 Take home = 90,000 - 17,220 - 1,780 = 71,000 a year, and 71,000 / 26 = 2,730.77 a fortnight Super on top = 12% x 90,000 = 10,800, so the employer's cost is 100,800

Rates, offset, levy and super figures from the 2026-27 rates file, checked on 2 November 2026 against the Income Tax Rates Act 1986, the Medicare Levy Act 1986 and the ATO.
How it is calculated
Salary = pay entered x pay periods in a year, or a package x 100 / (100 + 12) when it includes super
Taxable income = salary - salary sacrifice - the larger of the standard deduction and actual work expenses
Income tax = fixed amount of the bracket + bracket rate x (taxable income - start of the bracket) - low income tax offset
Take home = salary - salary sacrifice - income tax - Medicare levy - surcharge - study loan repayment
The Income Tax Rates Act 1986 sets the resident rates for 2026-27. Taxable income up to A$ 18,200 carries no tax, the band to A$ 45,000 is taxed at 15%, then 30% to A$ 135,000, 37% to A$ 190,000 and 45% above. The calculator turns the pay you enter into a yearly salary first, because the rates are yearly, and divides the result by 52, 26 or 12 for a shorter period.
Taxable income is the salary less any salary sacrifice and the work deduction, which from 2026-27 is the larger of A$ 1,000 and the work expenses you enter. The low income tax offset of up to A$ 700 then comes off the income tax. It shrinks by 5% of taxable income over A$ 37,500 and by 1.5% over A$ 45,000, and it can take income tax to nil but never touches the Medicare levy.
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. A single person pays nothing up to A$ 28,011 and at most 10% of the income above it until A$ 35,013. A spouse or dependent children lift the threshold to a family figure, and the family reduction is shared between partners by taxable income.
In the worked example a salary of A$ 90,000 has taxable income of A$ 89,000. The 30% bracket gives income tax of A$ 17,220 and the levy is A$ 1,780. Take home is A$ 71,000 a year, which is A$ 2,730.77 over 26 fortnights. The marginal rate is 32%: 30 cents of tax and 2 cents of levy on the next dollar earned.
The super guarantee of 12% is worked out on salary before any sacrifice, up to the maximum contribution base of A$ 270,830 a year, and shown as an employer cost beside the result. A study loan repayment uses the ATO table on repayment income, which here is taxable income plus salary sacrificed. The surcharge applies only when private hospital cover is switched off.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax comes out of a 90,000 salary in 2026-27?
The A$ 1,000 standard deduction leaves taxable income of A$ 89,000. Income tax is A$ 4,020 plus 30% of the A$ 44,000 above A$ 45,000, which is A$ 17,220, and the Medicare levy adds A$ 1,780. That leaves A$ 71,000 a year, A$ 2,730.77 a fortnight or A$ 1,365.38 a week. The low income tax offset has run out at this income.
Is super included in my take home pay?
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by the employer into your fund on top of a salary, so it never reaches your bank account and is not part of the tax on your return. On A$ 90,000 it is A$ 10,800 a year, taxed at 15% inside the fund. When a job quotes a package that includes super, pick that option and the super comes out first: a package of A$ 100,800 is a salary of A$ 90,000.
How does the 1,000 dollar standard deduction work?
From 2026-27 a resident employee deducts A$ 1,000 for work related expenses without listing them, or the expenses actually claimed if those are larger, but never both. The calculator uses the standard amount unless you enter more under More options. On a salary of A$ 90,000 it lowers income tax by A$ 300 and the Medicare levy by A$ 20, because each dollar deducted at that income saves 32 cents.
When does the Medicare levy surcharge apply?
Only without private hospital cover. For a single person it starts once income for surcharge purposes, here taxable income plus any salary sacrificed, passes A$ 105,000. The rate is 1%, 1.25% or 1.5% of the whole taxable income, so one dollar over a threshold can cost more than a thousand. Across such a step the marginal rate is over 100%, and the page then shows only the effective rate.
How are HELP repayments worked out?
The ATO table takes a share of repayment income above A$ 69,528: 15% of the income over that line up to A$ 129,717, then A$ 9,028 plus 17% above it, and 10% of the whole income over A$ 186,050. On a salary of A$ 90,000 repayment income is A$ 89,000, so the repayment is A$ 2,920.80 a year. VSL, SFSS and the other study loans share the same table.
