3 free UK salary tools, rates from gov.uk

UK salary and take home pay calculators

These tools work out UK income tax, National Insurance, student loan repayments and pension contributions from the rates HMRC publishes for the current tax year. Each one shows its working, names its gov.uk sources and runs in this browser tab.

Choosing a tool

Which UK tool answers your question

The three UK calculators share one engine and one rates file, so a salary gives the same answer in each. They differ in what they show first.

Salary calculator. It starts from gross pay for a year, month, week, day or hour and lists every deduction, the take home pay for each period and what the job costs the employer.

Take home pay calculator. It puts the net figure first, for anyone who wants to know what reaches the bank each month after tax, National Insurance, student loan and pension.

Income tax calculator. It splits the tax into its bands and shows the Personal Allowance, how much income falls in each band and how the tax compares with last year.

Salary after tax pages. A page for each whole thousand pounds across a range of common salaries shows the take home pay, the deductions and how the result compares with last tax year.

Where you live. Scotland sets its own income tax bands, so each tool has a Scotland option. Wales has the power to set its own rates but has kept them equal to England's, so a salary in Wales is worked out on the England rates. Northern Ireland uses the England rates too.

The figures cover a full tax year on a steady salary. Payroll works pay period by pay period, so a real payslip can differ by a few pounds. For pay in another country or currency, the salary converter takes a flat tax rate of your own.
